About

KIA - Karbala International Airport, a project expected to be completed in 2025, is located between the cities of Najaf and Karbala, about 60km from the capital Baghdad. It was not designed to compete with other airports in the region, but rather to serve the growing number of pilgrims who visit mosques during religious holidays. With 3 million annual passengers expected during the first years of service, this infrastructure will play a key role in the development and promotion of tourism in the region. It is the intention of all parties involved that KIA be sustainable and efficient in all aspects - operational, environmental, structural - and in the allocation of resources itself. The terminal integrates a culturally significant aesthetic, inspired by Islamic heritage and local architecture. GM provided design review services ensuring the application of applicable international standards and good practices for designing mechanical installations.
